Cosmic Origins Program Analysis Group
(COPAG)

Far-Infrared Science Interest Group (SIG 1)

Dear Colleague,

We encourage you to join us in a meeting of the Far-IR Science Interest Group (SIG) on January 4, 2016, at 5 pm, in the Osceola B room at the Gaylord Resort and Palms Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida. Those who are interested in the future of far-infrared astrophysics but are unable to attend in person will be able to participate via telecon by following instructions to be provided on the Cosmic Origins Program Office's web site.

There are two primary agenda items for this SIG meeting:

  1. Planning for NASA's Far-Infrared Surveyor mission concept study
  2. Future leadership of the SIG [PDF]

The Far-IR SIG meeting will take place in the evening, after Dr. Paul Hertz, Astrophysics Director in NASA's Science Mission Directorate, will address a joint meeting of the Program Analysis Groups (PAG), including the Cosmic Origins Program Advisory Group, or COPAG. Dr. Hertz will unveil plans for the upcoming studies of four large (>$1B) missions, including the Far-IR Surveyor. These studies will prepare concepts for presentation to the Decadal Survey Committee.

In addition to the agenda items listed in our original announcement, the Far-Infrared Science Interest Group (SIG) meeting will feature two 15-minute science presentations: Dr. Asantha Cooray (UC Irvine) will present "Extragalactic Science Opportunities with the Far-Infrared Surveyor," and Ms. Meredith MacGregor (PhD student, Harvard) will present "Circumstellar Disks with the Far-Infrared Surveyor."

Please join us for these stimulating talks and a lively discussion, starting at 5 pm EST on January 4, Osceola B room, Gaylord Resort and Palms Convention Center, Kissimmee, Florida. Remote participants are invited to call (toll free) 844 467 4685 and enter pass code 606956. Callers from outside the U.S., please contact Dr. Susan Neff to request toll-free numbers from your country.

With warm wishes for a happy New Year,
Dave Leisawitz and Paul Goldsmith, Far-IR SIG Co-Leads
