Astro2020 and IR Astrophysics: Planning for the Next Decade

March 30 – April 1, 2022

The goal of this workshop will be to give the IR science and technology community an opportunity to synthesize the priorities and recommendations of the Astro2020 Decadal Survey, and to provide a forum for thoughtful discussion and deliberation about the future of our field in the next decade and beyond. We will use this platform to bring diverse voices into the room and begin planning for potential new missions. Sessions will include a mix of structured and unstructured time to allow participants to talk in small groups and collaborate.

Building the 2020 – 2025 SOFIA Instrument Roadmap Workshop II

July 27 – 29, 2020

The SOFIA Science Center held the second of two virtual workshops July 27–29, 2020, to create a plan and timeline, or a “roadmap,” for SOFIA’s instrument development, upgrades, and capabilities over 2020–2025. The second workshop focused on concepts and feasibilities for instrument upgrades and new instruments that could address the science cases identified during the first workshop.

Building the 2020 – 2025 SOFIA Instrument Roadmap Workshop I

June 22 – 24, 2020

The SOFIA Science Center held the first of two virtual workshops June 22 – 24, 2020 to create a plan and timeline, or a “roadmap,” for SOFIA’s instrument development, upgrades, and capabilities over 2020 – 2025. This first workshop focused on science cases for SOFIA, including:

  • A survey of science cases for new instruments/upgrades
  • Generating feedback on upgrade plans and options
  • Requesting and evaluating the support from the community for a phased approach

Invited talks focused on the needs of the astronomical community over a broad range of topics, and how upgrades of current instruments and/or future SOFIA instrumentation can meet these needs.

Far-Infrared Next Generation Instrumentation Community Workshop

March 23, 2017, Pasadena, CA

Calling all who love those long wavelengths and high frequencies to the Far-Infrared Next Generation Instrumentation Community Workshop.

Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Caltech, Pasadena, CA, with sign-up for a tour of your SOFIA Observatory in Palmdale, CA on Friday March 24, 2017 morning (transport to/from Pasadena provided).

Come hear what you don't know already about SOFIA and the future plans for FIR balloon observatories and probes. Bring your knowledge of what science gaps we still have in the far-IR and how we can shape our existing and future platforms to get these measurements.

Community input is sought prior to the SOFIA Next Generation Instrumentation Call which will hit the ROSES street this summer. If you are unable to attend in person, a webex will be set up and an on-line submission form of your inputs will be collected and shared.
